Shunkyo Yamamoto (1871-1933), “Waterfall”

Shunkyo Yamamoto was born in 1871 in Otsu city in Shiga prefecture. His teachers were Kono Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo and Mori Kansai. The artist adopted techniques from Western paintings and photography to his formal trainings in Maruyama-Shijo schools. His distinct style had vivid colors and bold compositions. His works reside in numerous museums both in Japan and abroad. He made several woodblock prints.

“Shunkyo was born in Shiga-ken with the name Yamamoto Kin’emon. He later moved to Kyoto where he was a student of Kono Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo, and Mori Kansai. He became a professor at the Kyoto College of Fine Arts and an Exhibitor with the Bunten. He was one of the founders of the modern Kyoto school and a great figure in Kyoto art circles. He was a Member of the Imperial Art Committee and of the Teikoku Bijutsuin.

His style at first was of the Shijo school. He later became more eclectic, painting landscapes with considerable traces of Western influence and often including Buddhist themes.
