The Incredible Geometry of Van Eyck

Fig. 1 shows the painting partitioned into 3 columns and 4 rows.

Fig. 2 shows the painting partitioned into 4 semi-circles. Pardon my bad circles - they’re supposed to be pretty precise.

Fig 3. shows the painting partitioned into triangles. I counted 14 in total, but I could be wrong.

Fig. 4 shows all of this together.

“Virgin and Child with Saints and Donors” is on display in the permanent galleries of The Frick Collection, on 70 St/5 Av. Absolutely beautiful painting that engulfs you in its divinity.
